Service Barges
'Tilly'

'Tilly' is a 1991 Land Rover Discovery 200Tdi Commercial (before you ask, yes, it's got a 300TDi front on it). She spends most of her days karting Little Dan around, as his everyday car, but when needs must she swallows up the best part of his garage in order to take all the spares and servicing tools along to events. The choice of a Disco was a compromise for Dan, because he needed something that would fulfill several roles... a transit van would have been great for a service barge but wouldn't double up as an everyday car very well!

'Tilly' makes for a different kind of fun to most cars but, hey, Little Dan gets all his aggression out on the stages so why does he need a sports car for everyday life! You don't realise how flexible a commercial Discovery is until you own one. It's a doddle to drive around town or pootle around in, it'll manage a comfortable 80mph on the motorway while keeping your driving license in one piece. Then when the weekends come you can drive it down some muddy greelanes for a bit of off-road adventure or throw your garden rubbish in the back for a trip to the local refuse site.
She scrubs up quite well, too. The extra space in the back is used to swallow up a generator, welder, two toolboxes, several boxes of spare parts, a set of wheels/tyres, a gazebo, 4 jerry cans and other fluids required at each and every rally. The renowned Landrover 2.5l turbo diesel engine, with upwards of 200ft.lb of torque thanks to an uprated intercooler, makes short work of pulling this stuff around and the automatic gearbox makes for a slicker, easier and fuss-free journey. Sure, it's not going to set the world on fire, but at least it goes the same whether it's empty or fully loaded with 1.5 tonnes of trailer on the back!
For Dan, it was all about having a service barge that served as an everyday car too. There are plenty of vehicles out there that serve the sole purpose of a service van far better than a Land Rover Discovery - any high-top van for starters - but Dan lives in a little 3 bedroom house with a single garage and drive, and doesn't have the room to store a spare van for the occassional weekend! 'Tilly' serves up all the requirements of an everyday workhorse, with the added benefit of the load space in the back - and the seldom-used capabilities to head off the beaten track and have some fun in the mud.
